Yū es un estudiante de instituto. Junto a su mejor amigo Haru y su amiga de la infancia Kotona, suelen pasar la mayor parte del tiempo descubriendo el mundo. Un día, a raíz de cierto incidente, atraviesan un portal que les transporta al mundo de Ni no Kuni. Cuando la vida de Kotona es puesta en peligro, los tres se ven obligados a tomar «la decisión definitiva.»
